The Erfoud fossil trade is the commercial extraction, preparation, and export of Devonian-age fossils, chiefly trilobites, orthoceras, and ammonites, quarried from the Tafilalt basin in southeastern Morocco. Family-run workshops in Erfoud and nearby Rissani cut, polish, and sell these fossils locally and to international buyers, alongside a smaller trade in fabricated or composite specimens sold as genuine.

Look closely at the border between a trilobite and its surrounding rock, matrix and specimen should share the same color and texture, and a seam that looks too clean or too dark is worth a second look.
